She has played in masterclasses with Anna Noakes, Jonathan Snowden and Michael Cox; in an orchestral flute workshop with Alison Mitchell; and developed her flute playing further with Susie Hodder-Williams (Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra).
Ruth is an experienced orchestral player having played in orchestras since her youth (Devon County Symphony Orchestra, Cardiff University Chamber Orchestra, Cardiff University Symphony Orchestra, Exeter Symphony Orchestra) and has performed piccolo, alto flute, 2nd flute roles and in 2015/16 was Principal Flute of Exeter Symphony Orchestra.
As a freelance flautist past engagements have included: Exeter Bach Society, Classics Galore Symphony Orchestra, Budleigh Festival Orchestra, Exeter Philharmonic Choir, Wellington Choral Society, Blackdown Baroque, Seat of the Pants Orchestra, Vibraphonic Festival ensemble, poetry reading improvisations with Norman Bowler, contemporary music performances at A Quiet Night In, and various musical theatre productions (Northcott Theatre, Barnfield Theatre). Ruth performs regularly with Flute Cake (flute trio with Sophie Brewer and Jennifer Campbell), Zephyr (with harpist Sally Jenkins) and with pianist Alex Wilson. Ruth was invited to perform as a soloist with Exeter Symphony Orchestra in 2012 (Rutter, Suite Antique) and again in 2015 (Mozart, Concerto in C for Flute and Harp).
Ruth teaches flute and piano privately and within three schools (Exeter School, St Peter’s High School and The Woodroffe School), is a tutor for Blue Sky Chamber Music, coaches Devon County Youth Music ensembles, is an adjudicator for local Rotary Club music competitions and is the founder and Musical Director of Exeter Flutes. Every day, through her teaching, practice and performance, Ruth searches for the best ways to develop and share her love of music and of the flute.
Ruth is composing music for flutes inspired by buildings and interiors, see her blog www.makeroom2017.wordpress.com. Ruth also writes words and poems, see her blog www.rememberingmydreams.weebly.com. Over the next few years, Ruth hopes to amalgamate more of her own experiments with composing and writing into her performance work.
